There is a growing recognition of the multiple roles played by the immune system in combating chronic disease. In addition to the positive role played by T cells and other components of the human immune system, the negative consequences of chronic over-stimulation of this intricately balanced system have now become clear. In many diseases, the detrimental effects of prolonged hyper-stimulation of the immune system are now known to actually drive disease progression. It is the mission of ViroStatics to develop novel agents and strategies to maximize the immune system's ability to combat chronic disease while actively reducing disease progression.
These new understandings are best exemplified in the field of HIV/AIDS. Current HIV/AIDS therapy – multiple drugs directly targeting viral replication – has been unable to eradicate the virus. There is a growing recognition that successful long-term therapy for the treatment of HIV infection should not only reduce viral replication, but also limit the hyper-activation of the immune system now proposed as the cause of the loss of CD4+ T helper cells and the eventual progression to the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). New Anti-Viral Hyper-Activation Limiting Therapeutics (AV-HALT) drugs and drug combinations are needed.
This innovative approach is the prime focus of ViroStatics. Incorporating new understandings in the pathogenesis of HIV disease with a targeted modulation of the immune system holds promise to not only reduce replicating virus, but to also preserve valuable T cell function over an individual's lifetime of therapy.
From our beginnings as a company working primarily in the HIV/AIDS space, ViroStatics has now begun to apply our learnings to other chronic infections and the development of anti-cancer compounds, as well as the advancement of our innovative Bio-marker Assays for personalized medicine and the provision of services based upon our Advanced Flow Cytometry Technology. |
